WASTE-TO-VALUE OPPORTUNITY
Resource efficiency = energy security
Europe imports majority of fuels and chemicals, and in parallel generates far more non-recyclable waste than it can currently put to use - two challenges that will be eventually solved by replacing imported fossil commodities by locally produced waste-derived molecules. And ETGAS intends to be a driving force to solve this puzzle.
CHALLENGES TO BE SOLVED
The scale of the European waste problem
200M+ tonnes
Non-recyclable combustible waste generated in Europe each year, mainly landfilled or incinerated with or with no energy recovery.
65%
EU municipal waste recycling target by 2035 (from 48% today), with landfilling capped at 10% (from 22.5% today)
<1%
Share of EU plastic waste currently processed through chemical recycling
WASTE-TO-MOLECULES OPPORTUNITY
Chemical recycling can supply made-in-EU molecules
We consider waste as a lowest cost source of carbon and hydrogen, available everywhere and in sufficient quantities to alter current and future fuels and chemicals markets. By scaling up chemical recycling capacities, amount of currently incinerated and landfilled combustible waste would be sufficient to displace major share of EU fossil fuels imports, as well as satisfy future demand of sustainable molecules.

Methanol
A commodity chemical feedstock and a fuel, currently almost entirely produced from fossil sources. Shipping industry is switching to methanol-powered vessels and chemical producers looking to displace fossil feedstock.

H2
Hydrogen produced from local waste can fully displace all the fossil hydrogen produced today in Europe.

Methane
Up to 20% of all methane imported in EU can be replaced by synthetic methane (SNG) produced from local solid waste

CO2 capture
Capturing CO2 from syngas costs 3-5 times less than from waste incinerator's flue gas exhaust stack.

SAF
With EU SAF mandates in place, solid waste-derived SAF could amount of up to 70% of SAF demand in the EU by 2050.
